Press Release
iBEAM Introduces Geographic Identification Agent
iBEAM's GEO AGENT Enables Content Providers to Identify and Restrict Distribution of Content by Geographical Boundaries
SUNNYVALE, Calif., April 24, 2001 — iBEAM Broadcasting® Corporation (NASDAQ: IBEM), the leading provider of streaming communications solutions, today introduced iBEAM® Geo Agent™, an advanced geographical filtering identification application that adds to iBEAM's growing lines of applications and services designed to improve revenues for streaming media content providers.
Geo Agent, which is powered by NetAcuity™ from Digital Envoy™, the leader in geo-targeting technology, can be used by content providers to identify end-users' locations around the globe in real-time, by the country, region, and metropolitan areas. The new service filters and selects network conditions as well as customizes business rules for each end-user by enforcing boundaries for content distribution. The product will be available in June 2001.
Geo Agent enables iBEAM's customers to manage the complexities that result from the global nature of the Internet without invading the privacy of end-users. The service does not place software or “cookies” on end-user PCs, but rather it employs a sophisticated mapping technology to identify the location of the end-user requesting a stream. A simple “point and click” graphical user interface (GUI) enables the content provider to extend and customize distribution and business rules for each of its Internet customers. In addition, content providers can potentially avoid fines or legal fees associated with international regulatory laws, undoubtedly saving corporate costs and company time.
“Once again, iBEAM is helping customers turn streams into profit,” iBEAM Chairman, President and CEO Peter Desnoes said. “iBEAM's Geo Agent is a crucial component for companies demanding the maximum power of the Internet's global reach. Now, iBEAM offers its customers the option to enforce customized business rules and selective network options from behind the scenes, so the end-user's experience is hassle free and personalized, making the process a win-win for all levels of the commercial enterprise.”
“We are excited that iBEAM has chosen our industry-leading NetAcuity product to bring geographic identification services to its intelligent network,” Digital Envoy's CEO Sanjay Parekh said. “Through its use of NetAcuity, iBEAM's customers will be able to comply with international contractual and legal requirements and potentially increase revenues.”
Additionally, a content provider using Geo Agent and iBEAM® Syndication Media Agent™ can divide licensing rights among major regions — even among countries or major metropolitan areas. Content Providers will now be able to sell those licensing rights by territory. Furthermore, the data collected from Geo Agent identifies actual end-user usage in a given area providing valuable insight to content providers of what is popular at that particular point in time.
Geo Agent is fully integrated with other iBEAM value-added applications and services, including Syndication Media Agent, which enables content providers to control the distribution of their streaming media assets to multiple Web sites and collect detailed usage data on their content, and Advertising Agent™, which allows content providers to insert targeted advertisements directly into a stream.
In addition to Syndication Media Agent and Advertising Agent, Geo Agent joins a list of iBEAM revenue-generating solutions that includes Pay-Per-View Agent™, which allows a content provider to charge an admission fee when users access a webcast event, and Digital Rights Agent™, which protects content providers by securely distributing digital licenses allowing users to play valuable content only after users have met the registration or financial conditions specified.
