iBEAM Teams with Leading Oregon Internet Exchange to Bring Streaming Media to 620,000 Oregonians
Agreement Expands iBEAM's Distribution and Services to 1 in 5 Oregon Residents, Including Public School and University Students, State Workers

SUNNYVALE, Calif., Dec. 4, 2000 — iBEAM Broadcasting® Corporation (NASDAQ: IBEM), a leading global streaming media network (SMN) announced today that iBEAM will deploy its streaming media equipment and related services in network facilities housed at the University of Oregon campus in Eugene through the Oregon Internet Exchange.

Per the agreement, iBEAM will install its MaxCaster™ media serving systems at the Oregon Internet Exchange, which provides an efficient technical solution that enables diverse providers to exchange Internet traffic with each other on a cost-effective basis. The enhanced system will deliver live as well as on-demand streams from iBEAM.

The majority of those who will receive improved Internet access through the new agreement will be public school students, who access the Web through the Oregon Public Education Network (OPEN). OPEN serves virtually all of Oregon's K-12 schools – roughly 530,000 students. All told, the Oregon Internet Exchange serves 620,000 Oregonians, including students and employees at all public universities, elementary and secondary schools and state agencies.

“While this alliance optimizes the Web experience for a large portion of Oregonian broadband users, clearly the most important audience we will be reaching are Oregon's students,” said Peter Desnoes, president, chairman and CEO of iBEAM Broadcasting. “Students can use the Internet as a robust learning tool, especially when a tool as powerful as streaming media can be used to enhance the experience. Once again, iBEAM has struck an agreement that illustrates that the importance and validity of streaming media goes beyond entertainment and, in this case, touches the lives of students and teachers.”

Through the agreement, 60,000 students, faculty and staff at Oregon's seven four-year public universities – including the University of Oregon, Oregon State University and Portland State University – and about 31,000 state agency employees also will have access to the enhanced broadband streaming media provided by iBEAM.

“Many Oregonians will likely enjoy an improved experience of the Internet through this agreement with iBEAM,” said Joanne Hugi, who, as director of the University of Oregon Computing Center, oversees the Oregon Internet Exchange, “iBEAM delivers content from a number of very popular content providers such as Sony Music Entertainment, and LAUNCH.com.”

iBEAM's distribution network is connected by satellite, and augmented with fiber-optic cable, which enables signals to bypass the bottlenecks and subsequent packet loss that often snarl traditional streaming media. By using satellite technology, iBEAM also provides the economy of scale to minimize the costs often associated with streaming media.

“We're improving services and saving money all at once,” said Hugi. “Not only will we see great worth in serving the children, college students and state employees of Oregon through this streaming media solution, we also hope to cut back on long-distance delivery costs by having high-bandwidth content distributed via the potentially less expensive system iBEAM employs.”
